Fantasy Games
Fantasy games are a genre of games set in an imaginary world. Fantasy elements usually mean the presence of magic and mythical creatures such as dragons, orcs, and elves. Very often such titles are created on the basis of book series. The gameplay is varied. There are turn-based games and real time. The presentation also varies – there are titles shown from the bird’s eye view, or from the first or third-person perspective.
The genre’s history goes back to the days of classic pen and paper Dungeons & Dragons RPGs with such famous campaigns as Greyhawk and Blackmoor. In later years, the genre evolved and formed subgenres. Above all, high and low fantasy. In high fantasy, supernatural events are commonplace, in the latter, they are rare or even unheard of. There are many popular fantasy games of this genre.
The first game we will mention is the first part of the famous Witcher saga, based on a series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski. It was produced by the Polish CD Project RED studio, and the first part was released in 2007. The main character is Geralt of Rivia, the eponymous Witcher, a man of superhuman abilities whose job is to kill monsters that attack the settlements. The gameplay is, of course, set in a universe called the world of the Witcher which was created by the author of the books. As the game progresses, the hero is forced to make serious moral choices.
The next title is Final Fantasy XV, a Japanese RPG game from the series that began in 1987. In the game, you play the role of the young prince Noctis whose family has ruled the small city-state of Lucis for generations. You play the game from the third-person perspective, and the game itself is focused primarily on the action. You use a plethora of magic swords and your superhero skills.
The third characteristic title is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This is a game produced by Bethesda Game Studios. In Skyrim, you play the role of a person who speaks the language of dragons and follows the trail of the ancient prophecy. The hero tries to stop the arrival of Alduin, the god of destruction. With the progress of the game, the character acquires new skills and improves those he already has.
Although all of these games belong to the RPG genre, fantasy games are also action games like Darksiders or Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. There are also plenty of fantasy strategy games such as Total War: Warhammer, Shadowverse CCG, or Heroes of Might and Magic.
Fantasy games, thanks to setting the games in the worlds from books, often tell an extensive and inspiring story.
