The Game Review
As in other role-playing games of its type, this fantasy title allows players to create their own character that they can then customize. Players can partner with other gamers to tackle the game world’s challenges.
Though it is a sequel to Neverwinter Nights, the storyline of the game is entirely separate of that title and somewhat disconnected from it. As the name implies, the setting takes place in and around the city of Neverwinter in the Dungeons and Dragons universe.
With a heavy emphasis on narrative and in-depth RPG combat, Neverwinter Nights 2 skillfully straddles the line between overly esoteric gameplay mechanics and a compelling narrative. After all, if gamers can’t figure out how to play the game how important is the story? Beginning development with the Aurora game engine all the way back in 2004, the game is a leap ahead of its predecessor in of customization of both player and narrative.
Though there was a multiplayer mode that was ed by the company for some time after its release, the game’s online has since been discontinued. Thankfully the community has stepped into the void and provides much of the online experience found in the game today.
Producing two expansions and one adventure pack, this RPG is not short on content and provides a lot of value for its currently discounted price given its status as an older game.
Neverwinter Nights 2 Complete: the Graphics
Employing a graphical art style that is a cross between washed out 3D polygons and watercolor painting, the game has not aged as gracefully as some of its brethren but, in of gameplay, it is tough to beat. Of course, the soundtrack and accompanying sound effects are all appropriate and top-notch stuff. What Neverwinter Nights 2 has mastered is, like its predecessor, it makes the game world compelling and interesting, prompting further playthrough and even replay.
The Game Mechanics
Where it is hobbled is in its somewhat obscure gameplay systems and in-game mechanics. Gamers familiar with the tabletop RPG upon which the game is based will probably have no problem jumping right into the game’s world but for those of us that don’t have as much experience with those games, there is a bit of a steep learning curve.
In addition to this, don’t expect combat to be a breeze and even seemingly small encounters with seemingly underpowered foes could pose a mortal danger, keeping gamers always on their toes in both a good and a bad way.
Providing a classic challenge without all of the burdens that come along with that, Neverwinter Nights 2 is a great game for those who miss the challenging PC RPGs of yesteryear and want something that perfectly captures that era.
